Day 8: An Artistic Representation of Spirituality

Fueled by nourishment of what grounds us and surrounds us

We grow – vivid in color and rich with beauty

Our petals reach in varying directions

As we stretch towards new destinations and goals

We’re rooted in the Earth, yet extend towards the sky

Swaying in gentle waves or brutal wind

Our hands seek help while our feet keep us solid

Dependent on nature’s maternal clock

Our colors bloom and fade from day-to-day

As we react to both internal and external stimuli

Earth, Air, Fire, Wind – we’re exposed to them all

What elements do we let harm and what strengthens?

**I am an Artistic Spirit! For most of my life I’ve used the creative arts as a source of spiritual exploration and healing, even though I didn’t always do so consciously. Sometimes I was the instrument creating the art and other times I was on the receiving end. The connection between art and spirituality is so significant in my life that it’s infused into everything I do. I love music, theatre, television drama series (daytime and primetime), and creative writing and find fulfillment in artistic expression of various sorts: singing, acting, and jewelry design. Throughout the next 104 days, I’ll delve into how all of the above strengthens my spirit and has saved my life on more than one occasion.**

Day 7 of the Artistic Spirit Pledge

111 Day Artistic Spirit Pledge: Spiritual Growth Through Creative Expression

Day 7:  The Five Reasons I Enjoy Watching ABC’s Revenge!

In Day 2’s post, I wrote about how television drama series can inspire me on a creative level.  They keep my artistic juices flowing and my creativity engaged.

Less than a dozen TV dramas made it onto my list of all-time favorite shows in the past 30 plus years, ABC’s Revenge being one of them. (Stay tuned through the Artistic Spirit Pledge to discover more from that list!)

Click here to read my in-depth review from 2013!

Now in its fourth season, Revenge holds my attention and keeps me glued to my seat all hour-long.  Let’s examine why…

  • Complex characters: Many of the characters on this serialized TV show make choices driven by intentions both well-meaning and malicious.  While their experiences move the story forward, the characters struggle along a path blocked by hurdles that are oftentimes of their own creation.  Watching them encounter challenges, face them, and deal with the repercussions (or not, as the case may be) provides the viewers with individuals we can root both for and against.
  • Writing that surprises and impresses: Without boring me or trying too hard to be clever, the Revenge writing team continuously leads us on a rollercoaster ride of drama, intrigue, and action. I can’t multi-task while watching, my focus placed squarely on the events unfolding on-screen. I enjoy figuring out how the plot will twist and turn but am just as excited when the story takes a sharp left and I need to pick my jaw up off the floor.
  • A little bit of romance: The love lives of Revenge characters most times suffer from a severe lack of love.  So when they encounter a relationship built on trust, support, and mutual affection the romantic entanglements are all the more intriguing.  Plus, I’m a sucker for a will they/won’t they pairing! Watching to see when “Jack “and “Emily’s” (aka “Amanda”) relationship proceeds past friendship is just one perk of watching each week.
  • Family:  While many of the romantic pairings are riddled with pain, betrayal, and manipulation, the moments of genuine affection and caring give Revenge its heart.  “Victoria’s” actions are continuously defended by her claim of protecting her children, but her love and concern for them is evident – though frequently unhealthy. “Emily’s” love for her father brought her to the Hamptons, but the relationships she’s built over the past three years keep her both grounded and determined.
  • Anticipation: In a technology-driven society, we have the capability of watching our favorite shows on our own time schedule; yet there’s something to be said for watching a drama series when it first airs. Building anticipation, promoting discussion, and garnering immediate reaction are not just positives for those involved with the program but those of us who watch it on a regular basis.

For all the reasons listed above and much more,  Revenge is the one show I can’t wait to watch each week!

A Notable Spirit

Day 6: A NOTABLE SPIRIT

A spirit tattered and worn

Bruised by self-inflicted wounds

It floats and falls

The wind hissing through the torn flaps

A single note soaring with ease

Rising and falling in rhythm with friends

It blends and spins

The wind humming out a lullaby

The music and the spirit collide

Tears and holes soon patched and healed

They intersect and become one

Riding the wind back home.

DAY FOUR:  I Wish My Foray into Acting Had Been Longer

“Have you ever considered pursuing this as a career?” my acting instructor asked.

I shook my head in response but let the idea linger. “I’m a singer,” I reminded myself. “That’s my dream.” Yet, those three semesters studying acting provided some of the most life-changing, spirit-moving, and artistically-inspired moments of my life.

I signed up for Acting I on a whim, wanting to spice up my boring class schedule that included Algebra, Health & Wellness, and Psychology. I spent the first few weeks tentative to step out of my comfort zone until I belted out a beloved musical theatre number – acapella style – during one of our class assignments. A door opened for me, and I no longer held back. I challenged myself with each scene assignment, tried comedy, and reveled in the Shakespeare and Medea monologues. Dramatic acting came as naturally to me as breathing. Just like writing a story, acting involved dissecting a character’s motivation and making her actions understandable.

I felt at home on stage, energized by the lights and inspired by my classmates’ performances. The Kelly that emerged from that time period was a young woman filled with self-confidence, pride, and an artistic spirit. I only wish I’d listened to my professor’s advice.

DAY THREE:  Musical Theatre Sends My Spirit Soaring

Energy, electricity, and anticipation pulsate through my every pore long before the theatre lights dim and the house quiets. The overture begins, sending the beloved melody soaring towards each wall until it reaches not only my ears but my spirit. The love, care, and dedication that went in to the creation of each note placement mesmerizes and impresses. Voices echo from the stage, creating both a desire to cry from the beauty and a smile that spreads from ear to ear. I’m enthralled, entranced, and yet alert to appreciate the talent before me. When the lights return and the curtain call begins I rise to my feet in celebration. My applause signifies my respect and admiration to those on stage and behind it that put their heart and soul into two-and-a-half hours that moved this artistic spirit!

Day Two:  A Writer’s Inspiration

Garden at Bucks
Garden at Bucks

A fresh cut lawn on a spring day adds only beauty to an already inspiring scene. Seated in the gazebo nestled in my college’s garden, I close my eyes and allow my cheeks to be caressed by the gentle breeze. I feel the pencil in my hand and the notebook placed squarely on my lap, and my imagination plays. I envision new characters, settings, and story ideas – and wait until the scene is complete before opening my eyes and refocusing my attention on the blank page that awaits. Inspired by the ambiance surrounding me and the creativity brimming inside, I rejoin pencil and paper. The words flow. The dialogue speaks. The scene builds in conflict and complexity. The moment ends like a FADE TO BLACK, and I return the writing implements to my backpack. I’ll come back again when the clock strikes 2, and time between classes calls me to write.

Artistic Spirit Pledge

Day One: A Little TV Drama is Good for the Soul

Even before I labeled myself a writer, I loved the art of storytelling. Reading books about interesting characters and fantastical places invigorated my mind and spirit while fictionalized drama series cultivated my creative side.

There are those who hear the word “Hollywood” and instantly think the following: frivolous, unimportant, fake, unrealistic, and dream-crushing. But when I see that same word, I am inspired to create…to write…to imagine. My pen floats across the page as I scurry to write down all the story ideas that flutter in my imagination after watching a climatic TV episode. I hear a song on the radio and think it would be a perfect fit for a particular character or couple. I see a pendant at the jewelry store that’s a fitting representation of a character and I assemble a necklace out of that inspiration. While another artist’s finished work inspires me to create, it also motivates me to develop content based on characters, storylines, and worlds all of my own creation.

INSPIRED BY

Even before I knew it had a name, I was writing fan fiction. In high school I spent my “free class” jotting down story ideas and dialogue based off of a TV show that I watched on a regular basis. Sometimes I would guess what  would happen next and other times I would rewrite a storyline the way I’d expected it to happen. The challenge was to create dialogue that was in line with how each character actually spoke and storyline arcs that were both plausible and in keeping with the tone of the show. I’ve continued this activity all these years later, and it’s still exciting when I get close to predicting a storyline direction correctly. My career goal of one day working as a writer on a TV drama series remains intact despite twenty-five years of pushing it to the side.

CREATED BY

A fictionalized journey inspires me to create a brand new story – one filled with characters that are both complex and relatable, storylines that are intriguing and plausible, and plot points that keep me engaged to write. The TV dramas that I gravitate to most are those that keep me wanting more, and I, in turn, want to do the same for others. Creating my own stories and characters enables me to connect with other people through the words I choose and the manner in which I present them. On the other end of the spectrum, when I think my favorite TV show took a storyline way off course then that reminds me that I’m not a writer of the series…and to focus on creating the story I envision.

What does all of the above have to do with spirituality? Acknowledging what inspires my creativity and artistry helps me grow on a spiritual level. When engaged in an artistic venture, whether creating or absorbing, I’m connecting to the world in which I live and the people who inhabit it with me.

Following My Dreams into an Artistic Career

…once I pinpoint what they are exactly!

BACKSTORY

In all my time as a mentor to teenagers, I spouted the idea of believing in yourself and following your dreams.  That’s wonderful advice which would be even more valuable if I took my own insights to heart.  I have many “dreams” and coordinating skills but have yet to narrow down a career path that’s financially, artistically and spiritually fulfilling.  I flounder.  I grow impatient, restless.  I give all my attention and focus to the job at hand, leaving little energy for my artistic interests.

I’ve refrained from writing about this topic out of fear that potential employers would view me in a negative light.  I pushed the doubts aside and chose to put pen to paper all the issues and questions I’ve faced in my pursuit of an artistic, meaningful career with the hope that my experiences may prompt reflection by others in a similar predicament.

I am a writer who writes up a storm yet only shares her work on a semi-frequent basis.  I write to spur discussion, inspire respectful discourse, and cultivate spiritual reflection. I have a lot to say and care about the way in which I present my thoughts.  So, I take my time – reviewing and editing until the cows come home, which is indefinitely since I don’t live on a farm. Meanwhile, my writing skills are neither earning me an income nor are they reaching readers.

CONFLICT

How can I continue pursuing a professional writing career if I’m not sure which “dream” to pursue?

  •  SINGER:  Music was the core of my very being and my first true love. I’d watch television programs that featured singing youngsters or arts-centric schools and sit on my floor next to my cassette player singing every word to every Dolly Parton song.  I loved to sing, but had tremendous stage fright.  An issue I had to overcome when I performed on stage during a college acting showcase many years ago.  That acapella performance was a highlight of my life, singing my favorite musical theatre song to a packed audience.  Recording an album or singing on a Broadway stage is a dream that pops up every now and again, and I’ve accepted the fact that it’s not likely to happen any time soon.
  • TV WRITER:  Around junior high, I proclaimed to friends that one day I’d be a soap opera writer.  I knew the characters, the plot developments, and loved the idea of creating the dialogue while keeping viewers wanting more.  At the time, I believed it to be a viable and realistic career option for me. This passion for television dramas built my writing identity. I had so many storyline ideas and little “scenes” running through my mind on a daily basis, and the only healthy solution was to write them down.  Hence, my “skits” were born. I learned only a few years ago that what I was doing then (taking characters from existing shows and writing new storylines) actually had a name – fan fiction. My face lights up when I discuss a recent TV episode and find someone who knows not only the actors’ names but those of the writers, too. This interest formed when I was young and developed into a potential career option as a teenager. Somewhere in the last twenty-five  years, I pushed this dream aside and moved on to more “safe” options.
  • NOVELIST:  I never imagined that I’d write a book one day, but I have. What started as a writing prompt morphed into a story that wouldn’t let go. Despite many revisions that entailed painful plot and character removals, I am proud of the finished piece and can’t wait to see it on a bookshelf, or better yet…an “Out of Stock” sign on the shelf.  Because I love dialogue and see the action so clearly in my mind’s eye, I gravitated to screenplays and stage plays first. Then, I discovered writing a novel was only a different way of telling the same story.  I could describe the details, the emotions, the internal thoughts and feelings of characters that I would have had to restrain from doing if I wrote it as a screenplay or stage play.  The completed novel is book one in a series and I’m about halfway through writing another novel in a different genre.  I thrive on creating vivid characters and engaging stories and never anticipated that would take form in a novel.

I’ve spent the past few years working as a copywriter, editor, and proofreader.  I took easily to editing and proofreading, primarily because I like mentoring others.  We each have our own writing style, voice, and strengths but it can get lost in the restrictions/guidelines set before us. Writing was then, and is now, my artistic strength.

RESOLUTION

Which brings me to my current dilemma – pursuing a career in the entertainment industry that will earn me a livable income and stimulate the creative spirit within.  I do believe in all of the talents and dreams I listed above, and I know that one day each will have its turn to shine. My novel will be published even if I have to do it myself, and I’ll continue singing though only in my car or living room.  The dream that I once believed in more than the rest deserves its place in the spotlight.  Pursuing a career as a writer for dramatic television I don’t imagine to be smooth-sailing or bound to happen in a timely fashion, but if I never pursue this interest, I will look back with regret.

Believing in yourself and following your dreams are as valid and important as I used to proclaim so many years ago.  Now, it’s time for me to practice what I preach!
