111 Day Artistic Spirit Pledge: Spiritual Growth Through Creative Expression

Day 108: Writing Without An Audience

Writing

Standing on stage with only a spotlight surrounding me

I walk towards the microphone down-stage center

The house remains dark

“Is anyone here?”

The internal dialogue does little to quiet

All the nerves and worry

I clear my throat, open the spiral bound notebook,

And read my first selection.

My voice echoes through the utter silence

Lilting and falling with the flow of the words

So much heart and passion

For the written work I now share

“Is anyone here?”

I wonder again

“Does it matter?”

The reply.

I feel the sensation of the light upon me

And the comforting darkness around me

I soften my tone and draw the piece to a close

Waiting a moment to show that I’m finished

“No one’s here,” I decide

“But the writing still matters.”

Day 107: Assistance Needed

A Question For You
A Question For You

As I approach the conclusion of the Artistic Spirit Pledge, I’ve been thinking a great deal about what I do the day after. I will have spent three-and-a-half months writing every single day, so it will feel quite odd to reach 112 and just stop. However, I don’t want to just continue on with this topic. What will I write about next? I need your help to solidify my direction.

Please take a few moments and answer any of the following questions – use the Comments section below.

  • Was the Artistic Spirit Pledge topic of interest to you?
  • Were there certain topics or blog entries over the course of the past 111 days that caught your attention more than others?
  • What did you enjoy most/least about the Pledge?
  • Did you hit “Like” then scroll through to something else, or did you read the entire blog post?
  • What are your thoughts about the design/color scheme/arrangement of the blog site?
  • Do you prefer fiction, personal narrative, or a journalistic style?

Any feedback is helpful feedback so that I know whether the blog posts I write are not only reaching readers, but inspiring them as well.

Day 106: A Spirited “Dream” in Ireland

Creativity Prompt #15 (on Day 103) was as follows…use the terms DREAM – SPIRITS – AWAKE as creative inspiration.  The piece below is the result of Friday’s prompt.

My grandmother was a practicing psychic, and I’m entirely convinced that metaphysical, spiritual, and holistic abilities were passed down through the generations.

I don’t see dead people, though the joke in my family is that I talk to them because I’m the family genealogist. I never encountered ghosts or the supernatural-type entities growing up, and I can’t predict or see the future. The gift I received is one of a more spiritual/metaphysical nature. I’ve always sensed something deeper and more profound than what our five senses convey. I believe in angelic beings, déjà vu, and the healing energy of art. It wasn’t until my trip to Ireland in 2004 that I experienced a spiritual moment that would change the course of my life.

As our tour group rode horseback-pulled wagons through the Killarney National Park, I allowed the summer air to kiss my cheeks while the mid-day sun warmed my skin and spirit. We stopped a few times along the picturesque route then continued on our adventure.

My breath caught and my senses tingled as the horses trotted down the tree-lined path towards the Muckross House.

While we awaited entrance inside, I strolled around the outside – admiring the beauty from every angle. When I stumbled upon the back garden, my watering eyes had nothing to do with allergies. The colors of the flowers, trimmed hedges, and stunning green grass mesmerized me. I felt an odd sense of familiarity as I stood among the garden, a feeling I couldn’t place and didn’t try to.

As I do with any tour through a historic building, I take my time admiring the artifacts. I love the details in the furniture, the artwork adorning the wall, and the energy that fills the air. We arrived in a small bedroom that a young girl once called hers. I stood at the window and stared out towards the beautiful scenery below. All of a sudden I had this sensation that a young girl of maybe 8 or 9 stood next to me. She had a long black hair and wore a white cotton dress. Never before had I experienced something like that. I didn’t feel fear, panic, or worry. Instead, I wanted to know more. I smiled and wondered what it was she wanted me to know. Eleven years later, and I’ve yet to figure that out.

That moment, however brief it was, lingers with me to this day. The blurry image in my mind of the unnamed child, and the room in which she stood, ultimately became the inspiration behind a pivotal scene in my YA novel. I spent the rest of the day and evening thinking about that experience and woke up the following morning with hives. What one has to do with the other still baffles me, but the timing still intrigues me.

Whether only a figment of my imagination or a spirit trying to communicate, the result remains the same – I found creative inspiration at a time when I needed it desperately.

Day 105: Writing About Revenge (Drama Series)

We’re halfway through the fourth season of ABC’s REVENGE , and I’m as invested as I was four years ago. I proudly wear the label REVENGER, as many of my fellow Revenge viewers do. Why, you may ask, do I promote this show more than others? Quite simply – it stimulates my love of dramatic writing.

Had to get a little creative with this photo. Couldn't find a double-infinity or pen sticker!
Had to get a little creative with this photo. Couldn’t find a double-infinity or pen sticker!

As I’ve stated in previous blog entries, my creative writing interests lean more to the Dramatic Television Writing genre. From my junior high school days, I would guess upcoming storylines for my favorite shows and write scripts/scenes detailing what I thought was in keeping with the tone, story, and character development. My predictions didn’t always match, but the creative stimulation kept me writing.

Not all drama series that I watch inspire me on a creative level, but REVENGE is one of the few over the last couple years that does. I eagerly await Sunday’s new episode and anticipate the one that follows. Some of the many questions I’ve pondered recently include…

  • How will “Emily” get out of her current predicament?
  • Who will be next to discover the truth about “Emily”/”Amanda”?
  • Which main character will say goodbye to the Hamptons next?
  • And, will “Jack” and “Emily” EVER be on the same page at the same time regarding their romantic feelings for one another?”

The jaw-dropping (and shoveling-swinging) Season Three finale left me with so many questions and ideas about where we’d find the Hamptonites when the show returned in September. As I pondered the “what ifs” during the summer break, I picked up my pen and paper and wrote numerous scenes, doing my best to capture the voice of the show and the characters. Though the specific details differed, the tone and overall plot points remained central:

  • How and when would “David” find out “Emily” is really “Amanda”?
  • How will “Emily” and “Nolan” get “Jack” out of the kidnapping charge scenario?
  • Would “David” hold “Jack” accountable for kidnapping “Charlotte” and seek revenge?

I guessed some of the plot twists and reveals incorrectly (i.e. “Daniel”, cue tears), but that hasn’t hastened my excitement to predict what would happen next. REVENGE’s fourth season continues to surprise, engage, and impress. I’ve already spent many an hour drafting new scenes and story ideas. As long as they continue to produce new episodes, I’ll be watching and then writing afterwards!

Shimmering in beauty and light, there’s

No one else quite like you

One among many, yet

Wholly unique, you break

Free of set patterns and designs

Lovely is your essence, creating

A setting so pure in beauty no

Kiln could adequately replicate

Ever unique, you bring light to us all!

Sisters

I have a lot to teach you, Little Sister

About all that I’ve learned in the last four years

I’ll read you stories and give you kisses

And tell you to rat on our brother when he does something bad

I’ll sing you a song when you cry

Then hold your hand as you rock in your swing

I love you, Little Sister, from now until forever.

I have a lot to learn, Big Sister

Will you teach me?

When you read, I watch your mouth move

And hear the sounds you make

I see you smile, so I do the same

I follow you around the room with my eyes

And grab your hand when you sit by my swing

I love you, Big Sister, for now and always.

Day 101: Creativity Over Tea

Once again, today’s creative inspiration came courtesy of my toddler-age niece. She informed me of her desire to have a tea party with me, and I instantly envisioned stuffed animals, plastic tea sets, and frilly hats. Instead, she pointed me to the curio cabinet that held actual, and breakable, teacups and matching saucers. One was a gift from her grandmother and the other arrived via a jolly man in a red suit.

We brewed decaffeinated tea and sipped our tea, all the while enjoying one another’s company. We laughed. She told me about her day. Then, when I started taking photos, it piqued her curiosity. She stood at my side as I showed her all of the various effects I could use to take the image of one teacup and change the background, add light designs, and make it look like a sketched drawing. I let her try each effect, as I was now the curious one – intrigued by what design she liked best.

The images below are the two effects that she insisted were the coolest.

I find myself immensely interested in a child’s artistic nature. What colors do they gravitate to among the numerous offerings in a large box of crayons? Do they like to sing and dance or would they rather sit and draw? What’s the fascination with studying every photo on my phone even though they’ve seen them probably a dozen times already?

Did their spirits enter this world overflowing with artistic interest or were they cultivated once enveloped in their surroundings? I may not have an answer, but that doesn’t stop me from enjoying the results.

Day 100: Un-Bridled Emotion (Part 5)

Un-Bridled Emotion 5

(The original piece of fiction below is a continuation of the story written on Day 38, Day 63Day 71 and Day 88 of the pledge.)

Christmas came and went in a blur of family, friends, and food. Shari felt immensely thankful to have so many wonderful people in her life to help distract her from thinking about Malcolm. There were some questions after her nephew Jack relayed the events of their surprise encounter, but she’d smiled and played it off as unimportant.

The new year couldn’t come quickly enough, and as she stared at the countdown clock in the hotel lounge, she willed time to speed up. Though her personal life hit the skids this year, at least her professional life flourished. She knew the job interview went well and wondered whether she’d be celebrating next New Year’s Eve 3,000 miles away.

“A penny for your…”

Shari flinched at the sound of his voice and spilled her glass of champagne on Malcolm’s black suit jacket. She instinctively dabbed the damp material with her cocktail napkin and apologized for her clumsiness. Then, she cursed under her breath and removed her hand from his arm.

“You shouldn’t sneak up on people like that.”

“Eh, at least we’re now even from the popcorn incident.”

She opened her mouth to respond, but figured engaging him wouldn’t be the wisest idea. After an awkward moment of silence, she hoped he’d get the hint and go back to whatever date he brought with him.

“So,” he continued. “How was Christmas? Did Marie fly out this year? How is Grandma Ella’s health?”

“She’s fine. They’re all fine,” she quickly retorted and resumed her gaze towards the ever-slowing clock.

“Good, I’m glad to hear that.”

She could feel him watching her, and it took all her strength to ignore him.

“Shari, I wanted to…”

She shook her head emphatically. “No,” she declared with a wave of her hand. “Not here and not now.” She faced him, all her pain and anger brimming at the surface.

10…9…8…7

“Just leave me alone. You’re good at that.”

5…4…

Her hand clasped his when she turned to walk away, and the room went silent.

3…2…

As the crowd erupted and music played in the background, Shari stared at her past and wondered how she’d ever move forward.

Day 99:  A Successful Journey (Creativity Prompt #14 result)

Following a path set before me

With light, color, and beauty

I tread lightly yet soundly

My eyes on the destination

The road bends and the sky darkens

Rain pours, soaking my clothes and my outlook

With a heaviness not easily lessened

My feet grow tired and the path turns to mud

Each step takes effort

And I can no longer see the journey’s end

Where is my guide to lead me on

So that I can move forward

I fall to the earth, my ear to the ground

And I listen to the sounds Mother Nature creates

Though my body aches and my spirit sags,

I summon my strength and stand

I move ahead, determination and focus my motivation

The colors are brighter though the rain still falls

The sounds are heightened though the storm clouds clatter

The trees remain standing though the wind roars

And I walk on as both a part and a whole.
